‘Sustaining Communities through my Research’

The University of Johannesburg, Faculty of Health Sciences is honored to host the U21 Health Sciences Doctoral Student Forum of 2017, in conjunction with the U21 HSG Annual Meeting. This forum is designed to engage doctoral students with opportunities to have robust conversations around the sustaining communities through their research projects. In South Africa, there is a Zulu proverb that says: “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”. When translated in English, it simply means: “a person is a person through other persons.” Through research, researchers can collaborate with communities to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) far and beyond 2030. Students are not expected to give the overview of their whole project but how their research projects can be used to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  The aim of the is to focus on students projects that show:

  • Giving back to their communities through research ( i.e. how their research results can be used by communities to improve their health)

  • Knowledge-sharing with stakeholders of communities where their projects were conducted (results)

  • Developing strategies to improve community health aligned to the 17 SDGs or other community research projects

  • Increasing the relevance of their research projects in collaboration with those affected

  • Increasing the relevance of their research projects to improve sustainability, dissemination of results and policy impact

  • Cultural diversity when conducting research in their communities

  • Importance of ethics responsibility when conducting research or research with communities

We would like to invite doctoral students in health sciences disciplines to present their work at the forum. Students will have the opportunity to obtain feedback from an international review panel, attend master classes facilitated by experts in this area, and network with students and academics from 16 global leading universities.

Participating students will also have the opportunity to present a poster during the coffee and lunch break which summarizes their presentation and project.

Thank you for your interest in this event and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
